Enriching Milk

At the University of Guelph, Canada, a novel technology for naturally enriching cow's milk with an omega-3 fatty acid has been developed. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA is an essential part of a healthy diet and is especially crucial during the early stages of a child's development. Cow's Milk is enriched with the help of a special cattle feed, with contains a source of DHA Along with ingredients commonly found in a cow's diet. This allows for the production of milk and related dairy products, which are enriched with DHA.

DHA is the main polyunsaturated fatty acid in brain cells and is also found in the retina. It plays a key role in mitigating the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It is also thought to have a potentially favourable effect on select neurological disorders including depression and anxiety disorders. New Antimicrobial Compound

Health Shield Technologies, the United States, has developed a new antimicrobial compound for use in a wide variety of applications-from toothbrushes to hiking socks. Toconic, a composite materials developer, will incorporate the advanced silver-based bacteriostatic agent into its food processing belts to suppress destructive bacterial growth - to protect food products from degrading due to microbial activity. Some of the other potential applications include cookware, serving and processing equipment, food and beverage dispensers and cutlery. The coating will not wash off or lose its antimicrobial effectiveness under contact or abrasion. Robotics Improve Meat Processing Hygiene

Quebec Industrial Research Centre has developed CRIQ artificial vision technology, which facilitates the use of robots in the food industry, 'Robocut' device, fabricated by Riopel Robotics, utilizes CRIQ vision technology and arobotic arm supplied by Fanuc, the United States. Robocut complies with hygiene standards required in food processing operations. S 30400 and S 31600 are used for various components including the cutting blades, tooling on the end of the robot and a pressurized enclosure to protect the electrical and electronic components from a 600 psi washdown and antibacterial sterilization unit. Non-Alcoholic Wine

Researchers at Aqua Vie Beverage Corp., Idaoho, the United States have conducted extensive studies on the potential for non-alcoholic wines made from spring water. The company has developed Chardonnay, Chablis, Merlot and Cabernet non-alcoholic wine varieties that have the "sensual qualities" of traditional wines.
